This is the app’s article card — answer it. Nouns are spoken with their article.

Why Dutch is hard for English speakers

Three things your textbook assumes you’ll just remember.

Dutch looks close to English, then leans on details English doesn’t have. Confident Dutch catches each of them — on your cards, in your writing, in your voice — so they get practised instead of forgotten.

1

Every noun is de or het

de tafel, het huis — and nothing in the word tells you. The choice decides the adjective too: een groot huis, but het grote huis.

Every noun is saved with its article, and gets a card that asks de or het?

2

The verb keeps moving

Second in a main clause — morgen ga ik — last after omdat and dat, and the op of opbellen jumps to the very end: ik bel je morgen op.

Record & Correct catches word order in your own sentences — the verb, its prefix, niet — and names the rule that moved it.

3

Sound and spelling don’t line up

You write ik word but hij wordt, and they sound the same. Yet man and maan, zon and zoon are different words — and ui, eu and the g have no English match.

Record & Correct flags a d/t ending as spelling, and Echo names the vowel when maan was heard as man.

How it works

You upload. The AI does the sorting.

Confident Dutch reads every page and recording and builds the study set — and nothing enters your lexicon until you have confirmed it.

Spaced repetition (FSRS) brings each card back just before you would forget it — so a session stays short.

Word forms

Everything you have to memorise, captured with the word.

Your textbook prints het huis, de huizen. Most flashcard apps keep “house”. Confident Dutch keeps what Dutch makes you learn: the article, the plural and the diminutive, a verb’s past forms with hebben or zijn, separable prefixes, zich — and the preposition a verb takes, as in wachten op.

  • A de or het? card for every noun with one article
  • A past-forms card for every irregular verb: lopen → liep – liepen – heeft/is gelopen
  • Audio says what you memorise: het huis, not just huis

Record & Correct

Write it or say it. See exactly what to fix — and why.

Type a paragraph or record a voice note in Dutch. Every sentence comes back corrected and labelled with what went wrong — de or het, the word order, a d/t ending, an English phrase in Dutch words — in one plain sentence that names the grammar point you studied.

  • Keep any corrected sentence as a study card with one tap
  • Say what you meant to say, and it can tell a slip of the tongue from a slip of the grammar
  • Short je, ze and we are standard Dutch — they aren’t “corrected” into jij, zij and wij unless the stress is needed

We hebben een mooie mooi appartement in Utrecht.

de/hetIt’s het appartement, so after een the adjective has no ‑e: een mooi appartement.

2

In de winter ben heb ik het altijd koud in huis.

wordingFeeling cold is het koud hebben: ik heb het koud. Ik ben koud is the English pattern in Dutch words.

3

Elke ochtend ik fiets ik naar kantoor.

word orderThe verb comes second: after elke ochtend, fiets goes before ik.

4

Mijn dochter vind vindt haar nieuwe school leuk.

spellingAfter hij or zij — here mijn dochter — the verb is stem + t: vindt. You can’t hear the t, but you write it.

Echo

Say it back. Find out what came through.

Echo plays a sentence from your lessons in a natural Dutch voice. You say it back; the transcriber writes down what it heard, and Echo compares it word by word. Spellings that sound the same count as right. A real slip gets named — long aa or short a, ui or ou, eu or uu — and your intonation is drawn over the voice’s.

  • Any sentence from your lessons can be shadowed
  • It matches on sound, not spelling: word and wordt are one word to the ear
  • Your pitch line drawn over the voice’s

Reading

Read real Dutch. Tap any word you don’t know.

Paste an article, an email from your landlord, a letter from the gemeente — or photograph a page. Words that aren’t in your lexicon yet are marked. Tap one for its dictionary form — de week for weken, opbellen for bel … op — and add it with the sentence you found it in.

  • Separable verbs are put back together: bel … op is opbellen
  • Every sentence can be played and translated
  • Words you know stay unmarked — so you see how much you already read

Natural Dutch voices

Every word and sentence is spoken in a natural-sounding voice from the Netherlands — Fenna, Colette or Maarten — and nouns are spoken with their article.

Spaced repetition

Reviews at the right moment

An FSRS schedule shows each card just before you would forget it, and quietly surfaces the words you keep missing.

Practice

Practise before class

Go over everything one lesson covered, as often as you like — without disturbing your review schedule.

Look up

Add a word you just heard

Type huizen, liep or belt op and it comes back in dictionary form, with its article and forms, ready to keep.

Grammar

Grammar in your book’s own words

Grammar points are taken from your course book, named as the book names them — and corrections point back to them.

VerbsThe present tense, the perfect you'll use for almost everything in the past, 't kofschip, separable and modal verbs, and the irregular verbs worth learning first.
Word orderWhere the verb goes (second in a main clause, last in a subordinate one), plus questions, verb clusters, time–manner–place, and where niet and geen go.
PronounsSubject, object, possessive and reflexive pronouns with their short everyday forms, when to say je and when u, and the hun/hen rule that natives bend all the time.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What can I upload?

Textbook pages and worksheet scans (photos or PDFs), class slides, photos of your notes, and audio recordings of your lessons. Confident Dutch reads the text off the page, transcribes recordings, and keeps your book’s own chapter and section headings.

Which course books does it work with?

Any: it reads the page, not a list of known books. It is tuned for the way Dutch course books lay things out — Nederlands in gang, Contact!, Taal vitaal, Code Nederlands, the Delftse methode — and for the handouts of a language school or university course.

I’m not taking a course. Is it still for me?

Yes. Start with the starter decks and grammar guides, paste articles into the Reading door, and write or record a few sentences a day in Record & Correct. Anything you find along the way can go straight into your lexicon.

Which Dutch does it teach?

Standard Dutch as it is spoken in the Netherlands. The voices are from the Netherlands and corrections follow the official spelling of the Woordenlijst. Flemish — Dutch as it is spoken in Belgium — is not covered.

Do I have to type vocabulary in by hand?

No. The AI pulls words, sentences and grammar out of your material, with articles and forms; you keep, edit or reject each one in a review queue. To add a single word, type it and it is looked up for you.

How accurate is the AI?

Good, and not perfect — which is why nothing reaches your lexicon until you have confirmed it, and a reading the AI isn’t sure of is flagged for you to check. Treat corrections and translations as a study aid, not a reference work.

Where does the audio come from?

From Microsoft’s neural text-to-speech voices for Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands — the same voice for every word, so you learn one consistent accent. Nouns are spoken with their article.

Will it prepare me for the inburgering exam or the Staatsexamen NT2?

Not specifically, yet. It trains the vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing and speaking those exams test, from your own course — but there are no mock exams in it today, and nothing for the inburgering exam’s knowledge-of-society part (KNM).

Is my material private?

Yes. Each account has its own database, your uploads are never shown to anyone else or used to train AI models, and you can export or delete everything from Settings.
